Structure & Implementation of FIRST CYCLE: First stage

The University of Zakho has been chosen by the MHE-KRG to adopt BP in its educational system. Therefore, the starting point of this process implementation is the first academic year of each department at the University. To properly adopt BP @ UoZ, the first academic year is designed as a foundation year. This includes designing modules that can be studied as basic subjects and prepare students for the next semesters. This stage covers three types of modules which are performed during the first two semesters in the academic year. These modules are: University Modules, Faculty/College Modules and Department Modules (Figure 1).

Figure 1: Three types of modules at the foundation year

Regarding University Modules, they are four modules (Computer Applications, English language, Kurdology/Genocide, and Academic Debate) in each semester and they have to be studied during the first academic year. While, Faculty/College Modules include 2 to 3 modules in each semester depending on the Faculty/College. However, in each semester the scientific department can set only one module depending on the importance of module in the first academic year. On the other hand, there is another module called social activities, although it does not hold any ECTS, the students have to perform such activities at least 10 hours per semester. The table below shows a sample of module studied in the first stage:
